Marine Mammals on the Cuixmala Coast

You may find up to 24 species of whales and dolphins off the coast of Cuixmala .
These mammals belong to the order Cetacea and are included in six families with variations of formidable size and weight from 25 kg to 160000 kg.

Among the species are Balaenopteridae (whales )and Delphinidae (dolphins , killer whales and pilot whales ), many of which are endangered.

The presence of whales and dolphins off of the coast of Cuixmala is seasonal, being most common between November and April, when the cold currents of the North Pole run towards Ecuador .

The most common species to see off the Cuixmala coast are common dolphins (Delphinus delphis ) and spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris), but you can also see during the winter the gray whale (Eschrichtius robustus) and the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), swimming near the Cuixmala coast and the Chamela Bay islands.
