Cuixmala protects a combination of habitats which stand out for their high biological diversity: more than 1200 species of plant, 270 of birds, 70 of mammals, 68 of reptiles, 19 of amphibians, and many thousands of species of insects and other invertebrates. Many of these species are only found in the tropical dry forests of western Mexico, and a large proportion are considered threatened and endangered.

The endangered jaguar, green parrot and olive ridley turtle have all benefitted from Cuixmala’s protection.
